Flagship Lab Services is gearing up for the 48th annual Medical Laboratory Professionals Week – taking place April 23-29 this year.
Sponsored by the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS), the event is an opportunity to recognize laboratory professionals for their contributions to the health of our communities as well as patients in clinical settings.
This year’s theme is “The Future Is Lab” – a reminder to honor the lab workers who protect our future by adapting to meet today’s evolving patient care and public health challenges.
The Essential Role of Lab Professionals
A medical lab is a lab where tests are conducted on clinical specimens. These labs often receive samples from clinical research sites, including those serviced by Flagship Lab Services.
According to the CDC’s Division of Laboratory Systems, 70 percent of today’s medical decisions depend on lab test results.
Strong medical labs provide the foundation for accurate and timely disease diagnosis, prevention, and control to improve the health and safety of all Americans.
Lab workers also help protect against threats to national health and security, such as:
- Disease outbreaks
- Bioterrorist attacks
- Chemical and radiological releases
Challenges in the Lab
Both medical researchers and lab professionals face many challenges in their work, starting with demanding schedules. Many labs operate around the clock because timely reporting and accurate results are crucial to their clinical outcomes. As a result, many lab workers are required to work long hours, often over holidays and weekends.
Many lab professionals also work with hazardous materials such as chemicals and biological agents, which pose a risk to their health and safety if not handled correctly. This risk and the fast-paced environment of the lab require a high level of accuracy and precision, which can be mentally and physically exhausting.
Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic added an extra layer of complexity to their work, requiring them to adapt to constantly changing protocols and procedures to ensure the safety of themselves and others.
How Flagship Can Help
Despite the many challenges associated with lab work, lab professionals remain committed to providing high-quality care to patients and play a critical role in the U.S. healthcare system.
At Flagship, not only do we celebrate lab workers for their hard work and dedication, but we also provide critical services to ease the burdens of lab management.
We recently launched Flagship Lab Services – a new business unit specifically designed to meet the needs of early-stage Biotechs on both the east and west coasts.
Our fully trained and certified staff handle everything from inventory management and equipment setup to certification and testing, freeing up lab professionals to focus on scientific research and discovery.
Flagship Lab Services can also help increase quality control within the lab and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
